Parents need to know that Kon-Tiki is a 2012 adaptation of the classic nonfiction adventure story by legendary explorer Thor Heyerdal. The movie doesn't shy away from the extreme peril Heyerdal and his crew faced when they crossed 5000 miles of the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia to prove that pre-Columbian South Americans could have conceivably been the first settlers of Polynesia. There are narrowly-avoided shark attacks, near-drownings, and a scene in which a shark is taken onto the raft, stabbed repeatedly and sliced open, resulting in lots of blood. The ship's parrot is killed by a shark. A young Heyerdal nearly drowns in a freezing lake after trying to impress his peers by hopping onto a thin block of ice to retrieve a saw. The inevitable tensions that arose amongst the Kon-Tiki crew are explored, as well as the derision Heyerdal faced from the scientific community. There's also regular cigarette smoking, and some alcohol drinking where the crew act drunk.

Did little for meConsidering this background, I was a little surprised at how little the 2012 version of Kon-Tiki did for me. Maybe I should have predicted it. The thing is that the raft expedition, arranged in 1947 in order to verify that the inhabitants of Polynesia had originated from South America rather than Asia, was almost as eventless as it was successful.
The documentary filmSo the 2012 version of Kon-Tiki was a disappointment. There was one good thing about it though: it inspired me to watch the Oscar awarded documentary Kon-Tiki , which Thor Heyerdahl put together in the years after the expedition.

The film Kon-Tiki (2012) is based on a true story; a journey across the Pacific Ocean in a handmade raft named Kon-Tiki after Inca god of sun and storm, spanning 8,000 km from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia, made by Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl.
What the filmmakers have delivered us here with the fictionalized version of the true story of Heyerdahl and Kon-tiki is the story of the test of faith, which is quite remarkable given its scientific significance. Science and faith are often found at odds with each other in modern culture, but with Kon-tiki, we see just how close the relationship between the two can be. Both are methods of seeking the truth, trying to find the true inner workings of life, both capitalize on the inherent sense of curiosity within the human constitution. Rønning and Sandberg beautifully explore this relationship with the built in suspense and adrenaline of the encounters at sea, and impending doom of the doubtful crew. They also do it with wonderful cinematography and subtle use of special effects.
